Southern Yellow Pine

LaSalle Lumber Company and Bienville Lumber Company offer a variety of Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) in 2-inch dimension lumber. Southern Yellow Pine 2-inch lumber is a high-strength, dense, and versatile softwood sourced from the Southeastern U.S., widely used for pressure-treated decks, structural framing, and flooring. Known for its high strength, distinct grain, and affordability, it is ideal for both structural applications and, in higher grades, interior trim or furniture. SYP Lumber makes up roughly 85% of all pressure-treated wood in the U.S. because its cellular structure allows for deep chemical penetration, making it ideal for outdoor, rot-resistant projects.

Applications and Key Characteristics

Durability and Strength: SYP lumber is strong and is often used in structural applications, including residential and commercial framing, trusses and bridges.
Kiln-Dried Lumber: SYP really is the workhorse of pressure-treated lumber in the U.S., and it’s anatomy makes it unusually receptive to preservative treatment. It’s open, resin-rich cellular structure allows the preservatives to penetrate deeply when placed under pressure. Even after treatment, SYP stays strong enough for structural uses like decks, posts and framing.
Abundant Supply in the South: Its wide availability keeps costs down, which reinforces its dominance in the treated-lumber market.
Appearance: SYP has a light yellow/golden color, often featuring pronounced grain patterns.

Commonly Used Grades

Lasalle Lumber Company and Bienville Lumber Company offer grades of MSR2400, #1, #2 Prime, #2, #3 and #4 in dimensions 2x4, 2x6, 2x8 and 2x10 8’-20’.

MSR 2400 Grade – SYP 2400 MSR (Machine Stress Rated) Lumber starts with the finest fiber, guaranteeing strength and stiffness with consistent dimensional stability. Learn More
#1 Grade – Highest quality for general construction; recommended for high strength, stiffness, and good appearance.
#2 Prime / #2 Grade – Most common, recommended for general use where moderate design values are required, such as decks, trusses, and residential framing.
#3 – used for construction where appearance is not critical, or for general industrial uses.
#4 – low-grade, industrial use lumber, often considered the lowest structural grade, characterized by heavy knots, wane, and potential warping or decay.

LaSalle and Bienville Lumber’s MSR2400, #1, #2 Prime and #2 and our #3 are grade stamped and HT stamped. Our #4 is HT stamped.

Founded in 2018, LaSalle Lumber Company LLC is a joint venture between Hunt Forest Products LLC and Canadian based Tolko.

Both companies are family-owned businesses who have been involved in the forest industry for many generations. This partnership has created a state-of-the-art, high-tech sawmill located in Urania, LA.

LaSalle Lumber Company produces in excess of 300 million board feet of southern yellow pine lumber and timbers annually.

Hunt Forest Products LLC and Tolko have joined forces again, bringing the newest state-of-the-art sawmill to the "Piney Hills" of North Louisiana.

Bienville Lumber Company began operations n March of 2024. Located in Taylor, LA, Bienville Lumber Company LLC will bring an economic boost to the northwest part of the state, which is strategically located in the heart of Louisiana's historic timber. Bienville Lumber company produces in excess of 400 million board feet of southern yellow pine lumber annually.
